this game was so unkind to my frazzled nerves!! kickoff was 5am here, and i made the huge mistake of staying up late worrying about the match. before i knew it, it was almost 3am, and i was left with a choice between napping/risking not getting up on time, and doing my best to stay up. i chose the latter and chugged a big mug of coffee. that was my second mistake. all that caffeine just made all the suspense worse. so thank you guys, thank you for taking a few years off my life. and thanks for the bonus of two additional clasicos. gahhh!!
so puyi started and ended this match on the bench, which was fine because 1 match rested = 1 match closer to playing until he’s 40 ;) while el guaje’s spirits looked as high as his hair, puyi was caught somewhere between “i’m going to enjoy this match” and “i’m going to be so pissed if we mess up” — eerily similar to what i was feeling at that moment.
the first half was hell. pedro got my hopes up with a brilliant header off a masterful pass from dani, but barely 2 seconds (it seemed that way) after, malaga equalized. our boys would run up the pitch, and malaga would put a stop to their attacks. then they’d run all the way down to our goal, and i’d have little heart attacks. also, fouls and yellows all around.
malaga almost went up 2-1, but pinto saved our bacon and part of my sanity.
half time — 1-1, 3-3 on aggregate, advantage to them on away goals — seemed like forever. in the second half, pique scored the requisite i’m-a-new’dad-so-i-have-to-score-so-i-can-stick-my-thumb-in-my-mouth goal.
for a good 20 minutes, we were ok. then malaga scored again. ufff.
thankfully, iniesta and messi had mercy on us and put the game to bed. tough, tough team, this malaga. kudos to them. and kudos to jordi roura for not forgetting that he had subs. and kudos to the ref for not extending the game any longer than necessary.
here’s a video of the highlights
man of the match for me was alves. no contest.
puyi’s facebook post after the game:
love that photo… but it pales in comparison to masche’s post-match gift:
it seems the guys have left alex song in malaga because his anti-doping tests took too long.
